COMMISSIONING A PHOTO-SHOOT of your own boat must
cost a fortune, right? Wrong!
I know how difficult it is for most boat owners
to obtain decent photographs of their craft. That’s why I’ve
put together a range of packages for magazine-style photo shoots
to suit all boat owners however modest, or impressive, their craft.
Having been principal boat tester for Sailing Today
magazine for four years, I understand what’s necessary for
a successful photo shoot, even in challenging conditions. I continue
to write and photograph boat tests for Yachts and Yachting.
A basic shoot lasts 20-40 minutes, depending on
conditions. I usually take 50-60 images, covering the boat from all
angles and various points of sail, including detailed close-up shots.
For motor boats I include images at both displacement and planing
speeds.
A successful photo shoot is only one element of
producing good images. Once back at my studio, I select the best
frames to process digitally, ensuring optimal exposure and tonal
range for each shot, so clients receive the best possible finalised
images.
Photo shoots take place at the heart of the Solent,
usually within a couple of miles of Cowes, with the exact location
depending on tide and weather at the time of the session. By arrangement
shoots can take place elsewhere; the Needles, for example, can provide
a stunning backdrop.
